OPTIONAL: 3 HD Recorded Strategy Lessons from one of our certified teachers or professional tutors that match the three skills you choose from the recommended summer skills list
STEP 1: Reading Interview
Your child will be asked a series of questions to learn more about their reading interests and habits, and what they know about reading fiction vs. nonfiction books.
STEP 2: Where-to-Start Word List
The Where-to-Start Word List helps us to determine the level we should begin the reading assessment. Each word from the list will be displayed on the screen one at a time.
STEP 3: Assess Decoding & Fluency Skills
We will display a passage or E-book on the screen for your child to read out loud. As they read, we will keep track of how they pronounce words, how smoothly they read, and how fast they read.
STEP 4: Assess Vocabulary Skills
Your child will be asked a series of vocabulary words taken from the passage or E-book they just read. This will show if they can tell the precise meaning of words in the context of a short text.
STEP 5: Assess Comprehension Skills
Your child will be asked a series of comprehension questions that go with the passage or E-book.
STEP 1: Choose Genre of Writing
Your child will choose 1 of the following to write:
STEP 2: Brainstorm & Rehearse
Your child will have 10 minutes to think of a topic they know a lot about and plan out how they want their story to go from beginning to end.
STEP 3: Draft
Your child will have 40 minutes to flash-draft using their brainstorming notes to complete a full story from beginning to end.
STEP 4: Revise & Edit
Your child will have about 10 minutes to reread their writing, make any final revisions or edits before turning in their final draft.
STEP 5: We Score It
We will use our writing rubric to score their overall writing, introductions, transitions, conclusions, organization, details, word choice, tone, sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation.
