Your child or students have an awesome idea for a new story. What do they do most of the time? They go right off and start writing it. But when they open up their notebook, see the blank page of lines; they don't know where to start. They have all these ideas rolling around in their heads; but they can't seem to figure out how to get down on paper. Making a PLAN and taking a few minutes to REHEARSE how the story is going to go; will make a BIG difference.

STRATEGY#1: Developing Believable Characters 
Your child or students should learn that when you are writing a fiction story; you need more than just a topic. You need to get to know the characters intensely. Yes, a fiction story has a plot that tells what happens to the characters. But a GREAT fiction story will not revolve around what happens to the characters, but rather, what happens between the characters or within them. I'm going to show your child or students STEP-BY-STEP how to do this by teaching the following strategy:

STRATEGY #2: Giving Your Characters Struggles & Motivations 
You will want to encourage your child to think not only about what their characters desire, but why these motivations matter so much. This will help them create richer, more complex characters in their fiction stories. In life, the path is never smooth. Which means our fiction stories should be the same. Wouldn't it be boring if you read a story where the character wants something, and then promptly gets that thing? Instead, I believe we get lost in stories that take us on a slow journey toward overcoming a challenge or toward realizing a long-held dream. When the plot is delivered slowly, we can savor the final outcome after the long buildup. I will show your child or students STEP-BY-STEP how to do this by teaching the following strategy:
Smart Fiction Writers develop characters by telling about their motivations and struggles, and also by creating scenes that show these things.

STRATEGY #3: Plotting with a Story Mountain
It's important that your child steps outside the details of their story to see the big picture. I will show you how to use an organizing tool called a "Story Mountain" that will act like a timeline or an outline. When your child begins planning their plot with a story mountain, they are no longer planning a chain of equally important events. Instead they will plan a story in which a character reaches toward a goal, then meets and overcomes difficulty. I will show your child or students STEP-BY-STEP how to do this by teaching the following strategy:
Smart Narrative Writers sketch out possible plot lines on a story mountain that represent a traditional story structure.

STRATEGY #4: Showing Characters By Writing Little Scenes
Your child can use a story mountain as a guide to sketch out little scenes that will springboard into their first draft. No more starting a new story from scratch, with no words on the page. The thought of not knowing how to begin or what to write about first is GONE. I will show your child STEP-BY-STEP how to:
Use their story mountains to create small scenes that shows their characters' traits.
